Abstract

This year, the Languages Graduate Student Association’s annual conference explores how new forms—textual, cultural, linguistic, artistic, etc.—emerge through combination, reworking, and creative reorientation. We welcome papers that examine how artists, communities, and thinkers draw upon existing materials, traditions, or frameworks to generate something unexpected: not simply mixtures of old and new, but fresh modes of expression, belonging, and critique.

Remix can be understood as a conversation between disparate ideas, genres, or practices to create a hybrid between originality and derivation. Remix often reshapes the familiar and offers fresh perspective, transforming old ideas into new concepts. Possible questions include (but are not limited to):

  • How do instructors incorporate remix practices and tools (such as multi-modality, AI, intercultural citizenship, music, games, etc.) in language classrooms?
  • How does remix appear in media (film, literature, music, social media, visual art, etc.)? What happens when writers, artists, and creators blur the line between multiple genres—how does remixing encourage sub-genres?
  • How is translation an act of remix? For example, what cultural, ethical, and philological considerations are made in order to preserve the integrity of the source and target texts?
  • How is remixing a form of resistance within specific cultural, political or historical contexts?

We invite graduate students in the Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at the University of Connecticut, as well as graduate students from other UConn departments and nearby universities, to explore how remix is conceptualized, enacted, or challenged in literature, linguistics, pedagogy, translation studies, intercultural communication, performance studies, and beyond.
